2016 goals: May Recap

  • Run more miles than 2015 (287/695) 
May was a sad sad month for running.  My allergies completely crushed me.  I've been struggling for nearly 2 weeks to keep my asthma at bay while it had been determine to fight me.  I am a bit bummed about it since I had hopes of running a strong race at the Dolphin Dash 5k this upcoming weekend and wanted a strong run at Boilermaker in July but it is what it is,  I wasn't skipping runs because I wanted, but rather felt it would be foolish to run when I was on my inhaler exactly every 4 hours. I still need to take my allergy medicine every 12 hours and can notice I start coughing with 10 minutes of that 12 hour window ending.   This severe of allergies are new to me and something to keep track of for next spring! I did still manage to run more miles than 2015, but unlike the past 4 months where I was running double the mileage, I just barely squeaked by.  While reviewing the past 7 years of data, my training has ALWAYS been low and inconsistent during the month of May.  This will certainly be helpful for the future when mapping out running/fitness goals!   ( one year I logged 0 miles for May!!)

  • Log 100 Hours of Volunteering (37/100)  
Girls on the Run wrapped up earlier in the month.  On our practice 5k, I requested a sub so that I could plan/organize and be prepared for the event.  Later that week we had our actual 5k.  (10hrs total) Overall it was a good experience, but it isn't something I can keep up with long term.  My classroom suffered since I was overbooked.  I haven't been out on the Pine Bush Trails lately, but will hopefully get back on them once I finally buy Marcy a tick collar!


  • Read 39 Books (15/39) 
I was in a bit of a reading rut for the first part of the Month. I couldn't quite get into anything.  I ended up reading Are you there god? It's me, Margaret because I had never read it.  I've liked the adult Judy Blume books I've read and figured to give it a whirl.  I could also see a lot of the similarities with characters in In the Unlikely Event. I've also been working my way through all of the little house books. I enjoyed this one the most so far.  One of my neighbors has set up a Free Little Library in their driveway,  I saw they had a Barbara Kingsolver book I hadn't read yet, so I borrowed it -  I don't have much experience with short stories, but I loved these ones. As for my class, we've been on an Ivy and Bean kick. I like Ivy and Bean more than I like Junie B (who is a super brat)  but they're still quite naughty.  The children love the stories, even if some parts I edit

  • Practice Yoga 78 times (41/78) 
My good karma account has finally been fixed, so I've been able to register for classes ( I was given a gift certificate for the studio for Christmas) without having to explain why I wasn't paying every. single. time. 

  • Hike 1 mountain a month (4/12)
I went hiking this past weekend. I get to check off 2 mountains.  Only one do I think really counts.  However, both are on the Firetower Challenge list, so while it was only a .4 jog to the summit, it still counts.  After every hike I do, I am immediately trying to plan how I can hike all the mountains in New York.  My summer is quickly filling up but I'm sure I'll find time for 8 more mountains!

  • Complete 12 Bucket List Items (1/12)
Nothing to currently check off of the bucket list. I did add 2 more firetowers towards the 29 total.
