Patience and Window Shopping

It's a bit odd committing to a marathon in October.  The rush, excitement of a new training plan, new running routes, and hopefully a new PR come flying out after clicking submit registration to only be met with 2.5 months of waiting.  Sure, I could start my training now, but with the Hudson Mohawk Marathon 8 months away, surely I would burn out before I even toed up to the start line ( or to the corral 17 that I will accurately be placed in).  I still have 3 weeks (and one run) left of RLRF and I've built up to a strong base already before marathon training actually starts.  So for now, it's just a matter of patience.

One of the many perks of living back in my home town, is that races are considerably cheaper than they were while living in San Diego or DC.  Every time I check active.com it seems that there are 15 more races that I want to participate in.  I am excited to be in  two weddings this summer, (which come with showers, bachelorette weekends, and the big day) that have already been penned out as un-raceable days but also indicate days that I'll miss my group training run for HMRM.  My goal is to only miss one training run a month, which wouldn't be particularly challenging if all of the races in this area didn't all seem to be on Saturdays.

Despite all of this, I can't help but look. Checking local races is my favorite form of window shopping. I stare, I drool, I add to cart, walk away, only to return and repeat the process. I have a handful of confirmed races for the season with Lots of tentative ones.  I know that many of the races will still be around next year, when I am not training for a marathon but I can't help but feel like I'm already missing out on all the fun.  So again, for now it's a matter of patience.

Confirmed 2012 Races:
Ice Breaker Challenge March 31st
Freihofer's Run for Women June 2nd
The Boilermaker July 8th
Hudson Mohawk River Marathon Oct 7th

Interest List
Russell Sage College Bust a Move 5k   April 21st
Cohoes Founders Day 15k: May 20th
Survive the Farm May 26th MudRun 5k

Because these all fall so early in the training I will probably still participate in these.  As it gets closer to the marathon, I need to be more conservative.

The Saratoga Palio  Sept 16th (half marathon)
Rock n Roll Montreal Sept 23rd (half marathon)
Ragnar Relay Adirondacks- Sept 28 & 29th
HMRR Turkey Raffle-Nov 18th
Troy Turkey Trot 10k - Thanksgiving ( not sure of the date and frankly too lazy to look it up)

I know realistically that I cannot run my three desired races in September.  But that's the beauty of window shopping. No need to commit.

  1. I do the same thing "window shopping" local races. I'm trying to do a much better job this year of registering early for events so I pay the least amount possible. Our local half marathon is only $20 if I register early. That's a steal!

  2. Awesome! I just signed up for my 3rd Freihofer's Run with my mother and we are doing the Running of the Green this Friday (only 4 miles, but I know I am not going to come close to PRing lol). I'm still on board for the Ragnar, too :)

The Ice Breaker Challenge sounds awesome, I wish I was going to be around that weekend!

I think I'm going to do the Lake George 1/2 in April. I know it's kind of early, especially given my lack of mileage right now but I think I'll be able to pull it off, albeit very slowly. I'd just like to have my first 1/2 be kind of a cool race, and this one sounds fun. Am I being unrealistic? Can I go from running around 4 miles right now to 13 in about 6 weeks? I figure I can pull it off with some serious cross training
