This year, I decided to spend my New Years Eve differently than usual. This meant no alcohol or sitting around. A friend invited me to travel down to NYC to run in NYRR's Midnight 4 Mile Run, just I headed down from Albany towards the city. We traveled down to pick up our bibs (but sadly not our shirts since they had run out) and than sat in Grand Central Station and judged all of the party goers until 10ish.
The race set up was awesome. There was a dj and people dancing and enjoying the nice weather. It certainly beats being sardined in Times Square. We put on our running gear and joined the party. The drop bag area was very simple, just placing bags in a corralled area and hoping for the best ( it worked out with no problems) and there were plenty of portapotty's for all of the runners and families involved.
My only dislike of the evening, was the way too long of a costume contest, keep playing music less talking please.
At midnight we counted down and went for a run while an impressive selection of fireworks went off over the river. There were a lot of people so the first mile was pretty congested, after that I picked up my speed and even came close to my old racing pace for the final mile. The park was great at night and the drunk new years eve goers were amazing crowd support. It was an awesome way to start the new year especially when I woke up without a hangover.
Happy New Year!
